2017 Merryvale Merlot Coombsville
Farella is an exceptional vineyard where 20+-year-old vines ripen at a slow pace and produce fruit of incredible complexity and depth. The hillside part of the vineyard lays on volcanic ash and the crop is always very balanced with cool nights to maintain fresh acidity. Picked September 20th, fermentation was done at a really warm temperature reaching 95°F at peak and cooling down to 84°F towards the end. Time in tank was 14 days; the wines underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel after that. Total time in French oak barrels was 22 months; the wine was racked three times and bottled unfined and unfiltered. We added a bit of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from the cellar to round out the blend.
A Merlot lover’s dream, our Coombsville Merlot is the perfect combination of soft, blue fruit and bright, fresh acidity. Grown in the cool Carneros region, the wine retains natural acidity that keeps it feeling vibrant and alive. Aromatically, the wine is complex, displaying aromas of underforest, plums, and blueberries. On the palate the wine is soft, round, and expressive, evolving in the glass and expressing the blue fruits and spices alluded to on the nose. Drink now or over the next 10+ years.
