2015 Merryvale Petite Sirah Juliana Vineyard
Juliana Vineyards rewards attention to detail with world-class Petite Sirah. Petite Sirah is one of Winemaker Simon Faury’s favorite varietals to make because it can be tricky and requires sensitivity. The tannins are very easy to over extract and can dominate the wine if care is not taken. The grapes are hand-picked in the cool early morning hours to preserve freshness and facilitate berry integrity. Simon ferments at a low temperature to promote the full expression of fruit flavors and limit astringency. The wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (20% new) before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Deep purple in color, this wine offers a very fresh entry, with surprisingly smooth tannins. It exhibits notes of violets, graphite, blueberry pie, dark chocolate and raspberry jam on the finish. Power in a silk glove, this versatile and delicious wine will pair well with a variety of grilled meats—lamb, short ribs and burgers are our favorites. With proper cellaring, it will evolve beautifully for 10 to 15 years.
