2014 Starmont Chardonnay Stanly Ranch Estate
Handpicked on September 9th, carefully sorted and whole-cluster pressed to preserve freshness. Only free run and light press juice were used for this wine. For added richness and complexity, this wine was aged sur lie for 18 months in 33% new oak, racked only twice, left on the primary lees for 9 months and light lees for remaining 9 months. Native yeast fermentations and native malolactic fermentation were used to balance the wine’s acidity. The wine was 100% barrel fermented with careful attention to match oak and toast to the wine traits—restrained to push the fruit’s character forward and respect the vineyard site.
The goal of this wine is to showcase the potential of the Stanly Ranch, being able to control everything from grape to bottle. This wine is from one particular block on the Estate. What sets this block apart from the others is its ability to get physiologically ripe, producing complex flavors and aromas ranging from citrus to tropical fruits, while retaining bright acidity. Native primary and secondary fermentation as well as a judicious use of new oak are employed to allow the fruit and the site to show itself as transparently as possible. The final blend is then barrel selected trying to highlight the complexity and character of the Starmont Stanly Ranch Estate Chardonnay.
