2017 Starmont Syrah Stanly Ranch Estate
Hand harvested in the early morning from our Stanly Ranch Estate Vineyard, this wine was made using two different production methods. All of the Syrah was destemmed before going into open-top fermenters, but only a portion was co-fermented with whole cluster Viognier. During fermentaton, the wine was punched down twice daily and spent 14 days on skins with minimal extended maceration. The wine was aged on primary lees for 18 months in 12% new French oak (light toast) then racked only once to blend a few weeks before bottling. French oak puncheons were used for 27% of the blend which ages the wine more slowly and adds complexity.
This Syrah is made in a Northern Rhône Côte-Rôtie style, co-fermented with a small percentage of whole cluster Viognier. The Syrah is fresh in style and the Viognier adds a floral note that helps to restrain the fruit and add complexity. The lack of racking off primary lees is intended to accentuate the reductive, gamey notes in the wine. This wine is approachable in its youth but will develop nicely with proper cellaring, peaking 3-6 years after bottling with the ability to hold for at least 8-10 years.
