2017 Starmont Pinot Noir Stanly Ranch Estate
We harvested Block 1B on our Stanly Ranch Estate in Carneros on September 2nd. The grapes were 100% destemmed and fermented with native yeast in an open top tank with twice daily punchdowns and occasional pumpovers. They saw a 5-day cold soak, a fast, 5 day fermentation, and a 6 day extended maceration. The tanks were pressed on the same day after being on skins for 16 days. The wine was settled overnight and racked into barrels for 10 months. The final blend barrels were selected and the wine was racked and returned to barrels for another 8 months before bottling. Using 40% new French oak, the wine spent 18 months in barrel before bottling; ten months on primary lees and eight months on light lees. The wine was bottled without fining.
This wine shows the full potential of our Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir, where we are able to control all aspects from vine to bottle. Made exclusively from Dijon Clone 667 from Block 1B, you find complexity on the nose ranging from dark berries, bramble and a slight refreshing herbal component along with richness and elegance on the palate. Native primary and secondary fermentation as well as a minimalist winemaking philosophy are used to demonstrate and highlight the fruit and the site. The 2017 exhibits aromas of black cherry and earthy bramble. The wine enters the palate softly then shows a generous mid-palate anchored with a fresh acidity, adding structure to the refined tannins leading to a long finish.
