2015 Merryvale Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard
The 2015 growing season in Napa Valley started out with unseasonably warm temperatures in the late winter and early spring. This resulted in an early bud break and bloom. Colder temperatures in May (during the peak of bloom) resulted in a smaller crop. Hand sorting in the vineyard and at the winery ensured that we picked and crushed only the best quality grapes. The harvest was one of the earliest on record in Napa Valley, beginning on July 22 with the picking of grapes for sparkling wine, and concluding for most vintners and growers by mid-October.
Hyde vineyard is a very interesting vineyard for Chardonnay. It lies in a cool area of Carneros, protected by the winds and always produces some slow ripening chardonnay that delivers a lot of interesting flavors and balance. The wines typically show some spice and exotic fruit thanks to the clonal selection of Wente and Musque clones. For the 2015 vintage, our Hyde Chardonnay displays orange blossom and lemon tart on the nose followed by butterscotch, caramel, lilies, citrus, spice, fresh hazelnuts and daisies. The wine opens up in the mouth with fresh acidity and mineral driven notes, and has a broad finish with some sweetness. The wine is very fresh and balanced. It should improve for a few more years.
