2014 Merryvale Chairman's Selection Red Wine
Merryvale’s Chairman’s Selection Red Wine is a Cabernet-based blend sourced from some of the best mountain vineyards in Napa Valley. Each vintage Winemaker Simon Faury looks for lots for this limited-production wine that demonstrate the unique characteristics of fruit grown at higher elevation. The handpicked grapes were sorted twice, then gravity-fed into tanks where we kept the fruit at 50°F for 6 days. We then let fermentation happen naturally and reach a temperature of 90°F for a few days, mixing the tank with pump-overs and rack and returns a few times a day. After fermentation the wines were pressed in a basket press and we opted to keep the press wine in the blend. We aged the wine for 22 months in 70% new French oak barrels from Sylvain and Ana Selection.
During the 2014 growing season the weather was generally perfect at the right times, leading to an abundant and strong crop. harvest started and ended earlier than usual. The first grapes were picked on July 30th and nearly all harvest activity was completed by the third week of October, a full two weeks ahead of normal harvest schedule for most wineries.
The 2014 Chairman’s Selection is a blend of some of our most interesting lots. Every year we want to showcase a special vineyard and this year we were struck by the intensity and power of Rancho Chimiles’ Cabernet Sauvignon. This mountain vineyard always shows amazing depth and we felt it would make an incredible wine. We added some fruit from other mountain vineyards to keep that beautiful mountain expression of Cabernet and also to add some softness and spice to the blend. With proper cellaring, this wine will drink beautifully for the next 10 to 15 years.
