2014 Starmont Syrah, Stanly Ranch Estate
97% Syrah, 3% Viognier
Distinctive aromas of Turbinado sugar and clove remind you of the luscious smells wafting from your local bakery. A sip provides you with a smooth beginning, opening to a broad mid palate and framed by good acidity and texture. Flavors of red plum, white pepper and a smoky campfire resolve into a long finish with well-resolved tannins.
A luxurious wine, hand-harvested in the early morning hours from our Stanly Ranch Estate. Coming from just three vineyard blocks, the Syrah and Viognier were co-fermented in a Côte-Rôtie style to provide a rich and complex texture. A blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier, this wine spent 21 months in barrel (35% new French oak), 17 months on primary lees and 4 months on light lees. With proper cellaring, this nuanced wine will continue to gain complexity over the next 3-5 years.
Our 2014 Syrah was picked at peak ripeness and the grapes spent two weeks on the skins for increased color and concentration. The grapes were fermented using native yeast in open-top stainless steel tanks. Careful attention was taken to match oak and toast to the vineyard and wine characteristics, edging toward restrained to push the fruit’s character forward and respect the vineyard site.
