2012 Starmont Chardonnay Stanly Ranch Estate Carneros
The goal of the Starmont Stanly Ranch Estate Chardonnay is purity of site highlighting crisp fruit, bright acid, and clean, mineral notes. The 2012 displays aromas of bright citrus, pastry, orange marmalade, butterscotch, lemon meringue, and cinnamon with clean, mineral notes. There is bright acid on the entry to mid-palate with lots of fruit concentration including citrus and pineapple. The wine is rich and full bodied, yet stylish and graceful. It is fleshy with good weight and has a very clean, lengthy finish with pastry notes and minerality.
This wine is sourced from the Schlatter family’s estate vineyard on the historic Stanly Ranch in Carneros, where the tendency is toward bright acid with some minerality.
The fruit was handpicked, carefully sorted and whole-cluster pressed to preserve freshness. Traditional methods are used to add richness and complexity—aging sur lies for 18 months in 40-50% new oak to add richness; native yeast fermentations and native malolactic fermentation to balance the wine’s acidity—while aiming to retain the focus unique to this vineyard site. The wine was 100% barrel fermented with careful attention to match oak and toast to the vineyard and wine traits—restrained to push the fruit’s character forward and respect the vineyard site.
