Winemaking

Merryvale’s St. Helena Estate Vineyard lies on an eastern ridge overlooking the Napa Valley at almost one thousand feet elevation. Planted in 1997 under the direction of consultant Michel Rolland, viticulturist David Abreu and our winemaking team, this vineyard consistently delivers grapes that stand out for their plush fruit character, complexity and silky tannins.

The 2011 Estate Cabernet is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The handpicked grapes spent 21 days on skins before undergoing both native and inoculated primary fermentation, and native malolactic fermentation. We aged the wine for 20 months in 71% new and 29% second fill French oak barrels

Tasting Notes

Still fresh after over a decade, the 2011 is a testament to quality craftsmanship in a difficult vintage. Dried herbs, cedar, wet earth, and black fruit aromas indicate that although the wine is entering a more tertiary phase, it still retains youthful energy. Black cherry and plum dominate the palate, underscored by a gentle undercurrent of dried herbs and a subtle earthiness. The tannins, though resolved, still lend structure and a velvety texture to the wine. A touch of mocha and a hint of leather emerge, adding depth and intrigue. The acidity is balanced, providing a lively lift that keeps the wine engaging.

This wine has developed beautifully, displaying a seamless integration of flavors and a graceful aging trajectory. Enjoy now or hold for the next 5 years.
